Daniel glanced at the clock. A good six hours before SG-1’s schedule return, and he stopped dead in his tracks. “What are you doing here?”

“Hey.” Jack closed the door behind him and took off his jacket. He also wrinkled his nose, smelling the liniment. “How’s your shoulder?”

“It’s fine,” Daniel said, “and I ask again, what the hell are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be off world?”

Tossing his jacket on the nearest chair, Jack shrugged. “Mission’s over, we got back early. Don’t worry, Carter and Teal’c are fine. You’re still the only injured member of SG-1. I found out you’d been sent home, so once I was finished, I came to check up on you. So... hey, here I am. Surprise?”

“Oh, well, hi.” And feeling pleased at Jack’s arrival, Daniel walked over and tried to snag Jack’s coat to put it away. A usual gesture, he didn’t put much thought into the gesture until he realized he was reaching with his left hand and his tendons were suddenly twitching in reminder that this was a very bad idea. “Crap.”

“You okay?” Jack was there, taking the jacket away and putting it back – not the idea, but right now, Daniel wasn’t going to complain. Not about that. “Did you just...?”

Daniel shook his head, bringing his arm to cross it across his chest. “No, I just over reached. Um... did I miss much?”

“On the planet?” Jack steered him down to the sofa, something Daniel would normally have balked at, but not tonight. “No, really, it wasn’t much of anything except maybe some mineral Carter’s excited over. Even Teal’c got bored. I taught him ‘I, Spy,’ and a good time was had by all.”

The sofa was a perfect height, not too low so Daniel could make a fairly controlled landing without jarring himself. He looked up at Jack, a tower of concern peering down at him. “I’d have liked to see that.”

“Yeah, especially when he started saying he’d see something that was ‘chartreuse’ or ‘ecru’ or even ‘vermillion.’” Jack shook his head, then put his hands on his hips. “And what the hell am I going to do with you?”

Daniel snorted. “I’m fine.”

“Uh, huh,” Jack said, pointedly looking at how Daniel was rubbing his shoulder. “Okay, stay put, I have an idea.”

“Always dangerous,” Daniel said, leaning back.

“And that’s why you love me.” Winking, Jack headed for the kitchen and came back with Daniel’s favorite mug, placing it on Daniel’s lap and making sure his right hand was grasping it. He also dropped a kiss to Daniel’s forehead, warm enough to take away any sting of condescension from the act.

Daniel sipped slowly from his mug, appreciating the care but also stubbornly feeling like he should be up and doing things, that Jack had just come back from a mission and didn’t need to be doing extra thins to care for Daniel’s lame arm. He was an adult, and they didn’t need care. But something made him sit still, enjoying his coffee and watching as Jack puttered around.

“What are you doing?” Daniel called.

“Ordering dinner, because I’m hungry and I don’t see any dirty dishes in the kitchen,” Jack said, poking his head out of the kitchen doorway. “Pizza sound good?”

“I was going to make dinner, but sure, if you’re paying.” Daniel took a sip of coffee and tried the innocent look again. It always had a better result on Jack than it did on Janet. “I definitely could eat.”

Jack nodded and disappeared, but his voice could be heard, the flat-toned baritone ordering pepperoni, mushrooms and peppers. Daniel closed his eyes, relaxing and feeling the continued ache settling into his shoulder. A throb right now, it wasn’t the toothache pain he’d felt just after the dislocation. He couldn’t wait for a few more days to pass, when it would be back to life as usual until his next accident.
