“So…that’s it?” Jack said. He looked at Jacob, tried not to look at Sam and Teal’c and General Hammond standing there with him. He turned back to Daniel. “I just…um…kiss him and she’ll do all the rest?”

Jacob nodded. “That’s how I joined with Selmak.”

Jack swallowed nervously. All the times he’d imagined kissing Daniel, it sure as hell hadn’t gone anything like this. “You sure about this?” he asked quietly. He was looking right at Daniel standing on the ‘gate ramp, the event horizon shimmering behind him like a full-body halo. He stared right back at Jack over the rim of his glasses. Jack couldn’t tell if Daniel looked sure or not.

Daniel nodded. “I’m sure, Jack.” Liar. But if Daniel wasn’t certain, at least he was damn well determined. Not that Jack wasn’t happy as hell to get that snake out of his insides—that had been an accident from the get-go, an act of desperation when the human half of the Tok’ra emissary Jack had been escorting was fatally wounded in a surprise attack—but he hadn’t expected it to all fall on Daniel now.

But Daniel was the negotiator, the consummate peacemaker, the kindest and most goddamn accepting soul in the whole fucking universe, of course this would all fall on Daniel. And joined with that snake, that Tok’ra—Alatheia—she and Daniel would have this Tok’ra council, a faction that was a precarious ally at best, eating out of Daniel’s hand. The two were unstoppable...so long as they held out long enough before Alatheia died. If all went according to plan, Alatheia would sacrifice herself to save Daniel—she had given Jack her word that she would do everything she could to see to that. Her clock was already ticking away on borrowed time. But Jack knew that best laid plans usually weren’t worth shit.

“Hurry Jack. We don’t have time to waste,” Jacob urged.

Jack stepped slowly up the plank toward Daniel. He tried to block out the rest of the ‘gate room, the eyes watching them, and focus just on Daniel. Standing just below him on the incline, they were at equal height, clear eyes holding Jack’s gaze steadily. One look was all it took to shatter his heart, make him contemplate all his mistakes over and over, wonder why he hadn’t done this until now, why he hadn’t said anything. “You, uh...ready?” Jack said.

Daniel nodded once, then removed his glasses and tucked them in the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He gave Jack a shy, uncertain smile, and Jack suddenly didn’t care who else was there.

Promise me, Alatheia. Promise me I’ll get him back.

I give you my word, Jonathan O’Neill. I love him as well.

Yeah, well…with Daniel that’s easy.

That I feel this love for him, it is through my bond with you...
