I love that Jack's primary motivation is to make up to Daniel for that lost opportunity -- the consideration and affection in that impulse is lovely. And the 'coffee planet' and the Ethiopian connection are very cool, and I'm with etrangerici about the surprise-party line -- great bit of detail there, and so totally believable. Plus, wtg with the coffee kink -- I'm totally craving a cup now!
